Central Maryland Transit Facility

Location: Savage, Maryland
Client: Howard County Department of Public Works
Area: 21,000 SF
Completion: 2015

ATI provided comprehensive Architecture and sustainable design services for construction of a 21,000 SF single story bus maintenance facility for Howard County Department of Public Works. This project serves as the core maintenance facility for Howard County’s bus fleet. In addition to maintenance bays the project includes shops, storage, fueling, and vehicle wash facilities, tire storage areas, administrative offices, conference rooms, training room, shower/changing rooms and driver lounge. The project was designed to minimize operational and maintenance costs, and to provide a strong visual presence.

The structure is defined by a dramatic, with north facing clerestory windows. This maximizes daylight harvesting while providing the ideal daylight conditions inside the building. A combination of prefinished insulated metal panels and ground faced block was used for exteriors, a simple and cost-effective alternative wall. These panels do not require painting or maintenance and are one of many sustainable features of this project.
